Kalen 7 km – Bronze Age and war ruins

Kalen offers magnificent archipelago nature and historical memories. The area was the part of Kökar that first rose from the sea after the Ice Age. Tellmossberget is one of the highest hills on Kökar. Along the trail there are remains after Otterböte, one of the most famous Bronze Aged dwelling sites in the North. Hunters and fishermen lived here about 3000 years ago. Over 20,000 potsherds and remains of animal bones have been excavated at the site. Near the coast guard station there are remains of a Russian coastal battery from the First World War and of Finnish fortifications which were built and demolished several times during the years 1939-1945.

Nature is diverse and there are old pastures, marshland, little verdant valleys and gray rocky hills with spectacular rock formations. The sea view is stunning, and nature offers beautiful sceneries, especially during stormy days. The area has rich flora and bird life.

Enjoy nature! Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footsteps.
