Experience the amazing culture and history of Mariehamn. During 2015-2016 Ålands Museum was completely renovated, and re-opened in September 2016 with The Cultural History Museum of Åland and Åland Islands Art Museum in the same building.
The renewed main exhibition of the Cultural History Museum shows the history of Åland, from the first seal-hunters who stepped ashore onto the islands until todays global and multi-cultural society. Read more about the Cultural History museum here

The Maritime Museum Ålands Sjöfartsmuseum underwent the same process of complete renovation a few years ago, and became a modern museum for all ages. The exhibitions are more than just displays of objects, there are lots of interactive stations where you can learn about maritime history and culture. You will move in time and space through the exhibitions – from the mast of a sailing ship to the bar on a cruise ship, or the bridge on a steamboat. You can also learn how cargo ships are loaded, and look at all the fascinating souvernirs brought back to Åland by sailors from long ago. One of the more remarkable things is a pirate flag from the 1700’s Mediterranean sea. Read more about the Maritime Museum here
